My name is Mike Williams and I joined Cartrefi Cymru as a Support Worker because I attended an open day with the company when I was out of work.
The best part of my job is helping clients being happy in their own home and putting a smile on their face.
I chose this role because I was out of work at the time. I’ve never looked back because it’s so rewarding. It can be challenging, but you learn something new every day. The thing I like best about my job is putting a smile on clients faces, being happy and proud after my shift, feeling I’ve made a difference to those we look after.
You keep learning no matter how long you have been in the job, always be ready to learn new things.
To be a good carer you need to be patient, you learn new things every day. Life skills are important as well, I always treat people how they want to be treated and how I would be expected to be cared from if I need care someday (hopefully not for a long time).
The key skills you need to be a carer are to be a good listener. Be flexible with working patterns. Help people put a smile on their face.
