The postnatal period refers to the time after childbirth up until 6 – 8 weeks after birth. During this time women, birthing people and their families will receive care from a midwife, the GP and a health visitor.
Hospitals have postnatal wards where some women and birthing people stay for short periods of time, however, most of the care is provided in the community and includes:
- Assessment of the woman, birthing persons and family’s health and wellbeing
- Assessment of the baby's health (including physical examination and observation)
- Ensuring baby is breast or bottle feeding well, monitor weight
- Offer screening e.g., newborn blood spot and hearing screening for baby
- Work with other professionals such as the GP and health visitor to provide seamless care and ensure the family have all the support required
