Introduction To Children's Nursing

Articles

A children’s nurse cares for children and young people from birth ( those born prematurely) to 16 years old or those who are 19 years old if they have complex health issues. They provide care to the children, young people and their families in the hospital, at school and in the community setting, this includes in the child’s home. They care for children and young people who are unwell, disabled and dying as well as undertaking health promotion. They may have short or long-term health conditions.

The aim of a children’s nurse is to improve the quality of life of the individuals they care for.

Children’s Nurses can work in specialised clinics as well as in other workplaces such as schools, special schools, neonatal and even in local councils ensuring that children are well and stay well.

As a Children’s Nurse, you will assess the child/young person and then plan and deliver the care they need working as part of a multi-disciplinary team (MDT), working with other health professionals such as doctors, physiotherapists, and radiographers for example.

Children’s Nurses play a vital role in supporting families, friends, and carers when they are worried and anxious about their loved ones.
